Canada has run out of apartments.
We need to build more.
Government must help.
Across the country, rental vacancies are at a 21-year low of 1.9%.
Low vacancy rates make it difficult for Canadians to find housing,
and drive up the cost of renting.
Canada’s housing construction peaked in 1979, and after four decades of neglect, Canada has the fewest homes per capita in the G7.
Despite having the most land and the lowest population density, we have the highest housing prices.
Canadian Rental Housing Providers for Affordable Housing is an alliance of Canada’s public apartment real estate investment trusts working to address Canada’s housing affordability and supply crisis.
We want to build more homes, but the government’s threat to change the tax treatment of rental housing providers means we can’t raise the capital we need to build.
We are calling on the federal government to champion the construction of new affordable and middle-class rental housing, today.
